BEIBU GULF ECONOMY
Local airlines ambitious to open ASEAN markets
March 22 marks the tenth anniversary of the founding of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Economic Zone. This initiative includes six of the most southern cities in Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and has become a gateway for China—ASEAN cooperation. Last year, the region’s first local airline was set up in the regional capital Nanning and is ambitious to explore markets in ASEAN countries. He Weiwei has more.
At Nanning Wuxu International Airport,Luo Xuan is going through preparations before boarding her plane. She’s a purser of Guangxi Beibu Gulf Airlines. Today she’s flying to Changsha city in the neighboring Hunan province.

We have a number of domestic flights to cities across China, like Sanya, Qingdao,Hefei and Hohhot. We cover different regions from the south to the north. The airlines was established just one year ago,but it’s one of few airline companies in China that managed to make a profit in its founding year. Fresh as the airline is,there are already regular passengers.

I work in Changsha and often take their flights to Nanning in the Beibu Gulf region. They provide good services and comfortable trips.
The rapid development of the economic zone means the region is seeing increasingly busy air traffic and a growing number of visitors from both home and abroad. The China—ASEAN Expo, which is held annually in Nanning, especially adds to this traffic.

The newly—established airlines now only has fights within China, and it’s planning to open more routes to Southeast Asian countries to meet the increasing demand of business exchanges between the Beibu Gulf and the ASEAN countries.

We’ll soon open flights to Vietnam,Cambodia and Malaysia first,as the region sees active cooperation with these three countries in tourism, logistics and financing. The potential of the market is promising.
The following step for Guangxi Beibu Gulf Airlines will see their flights covering all ASEAN members by the end of 2020,with estimated passenger numbers of 10 million annually.
