The Tomb of Crown Prince Yide
This is our second destination today, the Tomb of Crown Prince Yide.
Prince Yide, called Li Chongrun, was the first son of Li Xian, the fourth emperor of the Tang Dynasty. He was killed in Luoyang in 701 AD for his anger over Wu Zetian's dictatorship. He was only 19 years old then.In 705 AD,when Li Xian returned to the throne,he was awarded posthumously the title of Crown Prince Yide.In the year of 706 AD,his body was moved from Luoyang to the Qianling Mausoleum area and was buried in a satellite tomb. The excavation of the Tomb of Crown Prince Yide was carried out from July 1971 to May 1972. There was a mound and an enclosure wall.To the south of the wall were a pair of stone lions, two pairs of stone figures(one was destroyed and only the pedestal remains),and a pair of obelisks(destroyed and buried in the earth). The tomb consists of a tomb passage, three doors, seven skylights, eight niches, front and back tunnels as well as front and back tomb chambers. It is 100.8 meters long.
The tomb is large and abundant with burial arti cles. There are 40 well-preserved mural paintings on the wall of the tomb passage, doorways, sky lights, front and back tunnels as well as front and back chambers. The paintings consist of guards of honor,a Blue Dragon,a White Tiger, city walls, watch towers, musicians, men servants and maids of honor. These show Li Chongrun's special identity and extraordinary status.Using the mural“Guards of Ho-nor”for example,in the Tomb of Princess Yong tai, twelve halberds were painted on the wall;in the Tomb of Prince Zhanghuai,14 halberds were painted;yet in this tomb,48 halberds were painted just as in an imperial mausoleum. The mural painting entitled“Guards of Honor”depicts 196 guards of honor in three parts:infantrymen, cavalrymen and chariots. They look strong and powerful. There are also mural paintings entitled Out for Hunting and Maids of Honor. The two mural paintings entitled Maids of Honor are found symmetrical on the south and north walls of the front chamber, each consis ting of 7 maids.Rich in color and different in carri age,the Maids of Honor truly represents daily court life in the Tang Dynasty. These mural paintings in the Tomb of Prince Yide are reflection of high artistic attainments. They constitute an underground exhibi tion of the Tang mural paintings. The excavation of the tomb has brought about an important discovery of the Tang Dynasty mural paintings in Shaanxi.
The carved sketches on both sides of the stone coffin are fine and smooth, and they give a good expression to the features of the Tang-style carved sketches:smooth, clear and powerful.More than 1 000 historical artifacts have been unearthed from the Tomb of Crown Prince Yide, including pottery figures,tri-colored glazed figures, earthen ware as well as gold, bronze and iron ware.
Now we will go to visit the Famen Temple.

“I hear you've just come back from India.”
“That's right—I was a guest of a rajah.”
“Were you,really?Did you go hunting?”
“Oh,yes. One day he took me into the jungle to shoot tigers.”
“Any luck?”
“Yes—we didn't meet any!”
