The Tomb of Princess Yongtai
We have now arrived at the Tomb of Princess Yongtai.First of all,I will introduce its history to you.
The Tomb of Princess Yongtai, one of the 17 satellite tombs of the Qianling Mausoleum, lies three kilometers southeast of the Qianling Mausoleum.
The name of Princess Yongtai was Li Xianhui. She was the seventh daughter of the Tang Emperor Zhongzong(Li Xian)and the grand-daughter of Em peror Gaozong and his wife Empress Wu Zetian. In 701 AD Princess Yongtai died in Luoyang,Henan Province at the age of 17 for unknown reasons. Some say she was persecuted to death by Empress Wu,yet others say she died of a miscarriage.
The path to Princess Yongtais tomb is lined with a pair of stone lions, two pairs of stone figures, and a pair of obelisks(ornamental stone columns). The excavation of the tomb was carried out between 1960 and 1962.It is the largest of the Tang tombs excavated since 1949.The tomb is pyramid-shaped,87.5 meters long and 3.9 meters wide. The burial chamber is 16.7 meters deep.As a companion tomb of the Qianling Mausoleum, the eternal place of Princess Yongtai was not far away from the mausoleum and is noted for its large mural Palace Maids-in-Waiting.The mural demonstrates so high an artistic level that it is a model for the study of the Tang-style paintings. The tomb consists of a main passage, five doorways, six skylights,a corridor, eight small niches,an antechamber and a burial chamber. The burial chamber represents the house where she lived before her death. The walls on both sides of the tomb passage are covered with murals of a Blue Dragon,a White Tiger, and warriors in uniforms, with gilded swords in their belts. In the eight small niches on both sides of the skylights there are a multitude of tri-colored glazed pottery figurines, pottery and porcelain ware, and other burial objects.
Although once robbed, the Tomb of Princess Yongtai still held more than 1 000 valuable cultural artifacts. These treasures were murals, pottery and wooden figurines,tri-colored glazed pottery figu rines, gold vessels, jade articles, and copper ware. The tri-colored glazed pottery figurines, which are beautifully shaped and have a peculiar decorative design in many bright colors, demon strate the high artistic level of the Tang ceramic in dustry.
In the rear chamber lay the outer stone coffin of Princess Yongtai and her husband. In the middle of the coffin was a door, with a servant in waiting on each side. The outer stone coffin was carved with exquisite pictures on both sides. The inner wooden coffin has completely rotten away due to its saturation in silt over a long period of time.
I believe that everyone can see that the Tang Dynasty was very glorious from the Tomb of Princess Yongtai.
