中国当代文学的泰斗，你知道吗？

当代作品_北美中国学的历史与现状

当代作品的译介，美国大有后来居上的气象。成果之丰，不胜枚举。所幸已有前贤大作，可供检索。美国本土有季博思（Donald A.Gibbs）等人编的《中国现代文学研究与翻译书目：1918—1942》（A Bibliography of Studies and Translations of Modern Chinese Literature，1918—1942）^[57]。此编包括研究，然有专章罗列译文。澳大利亚昆士兰大学雷金庆（Kam Louie）和李木兰（Louise Edwards）两位教授合编的《当代中文小说英文译评目录，1945—1992》（Bibliography of English Translations and Critiques of Contemporary Chinese Fiction，1945—1992）^[58]，蔸集了中国台湾、香港、大陆所出版之中文小说的英文翻译与评论论文，步武前编，呈现其后近50年中文小说英译的情况。其未包含的诗歌部分，有《英译中文新诗索引：1917—1995》（Guide to Modern Chinese Poems in English Translations 1917—1995）加以弥补。该目录由前述汪次昕与邱冬银（Cathy Chiu）两位女士主编，收英译中文新诗约5 500首，涵盖815位中国大陆、台湾、香港及海外诗人之作。篇末附中英题名对照表及威氏拼音作者姓名对照表。

综述专文，可参看美国汉学家金介甫（Jeffrey C.Kinkley）教授所撰、载于苏州大学海外汉学（中国文学）研究中心网站的《中国文学（1949—1999）的英译本出版情况述评》一文^[59]。这是他修订过的，1993年为评论新书、指导大学图书馆购书的美国图书馆协会刊物《选择》（Choice）所作的旧稿。这篇文章简明扼要、提纲挈领，评述了中国新时期文学的英译本，并介绍英语世界接受中国新时期文学的情况，重点是小说。

事实也是，当代中国的文学以小说成就最为突出，伴随电影改编，使一些作家如余华、莫言，在海外也广为人知。其英译本不但为学术出版机构所重，也受到商业出版社追捧。至于诗歌、戏剧，则仍是文学殿堂的清供，难以走入寻常人家。

美国英译中国当代小说的泰斗，除年近70的葛浩文（Howard Goldblatt）外，不作第二人选。他于1974年在美国印第安纳大学读完博士学位后，从事了30多年中国文学的教学和研究工作，出版了多部学术著作，至今已翻译了40多部中国大陆和台湾的作品。他创办了《现代中国文学》期刊，并兼任多个学术及文学期刊编辑委员会顾问，目前是美国圣母大学（University of Notre Dame）的研究教授。1999年他与妻子林丽君（Sylvia Li-chun Lin）合译的朱天文作品《荒人手记》^[60]荣获美国文学翻译家协会颁发的年度翻译奖，他2007年翻译的姜戎《狼图腾》^[61]获得首届曼氏亚洲文学奖，与林丽君合译的毕飞宇《青衣》英译本^[62]进入了2008年英国独立报外国小说奖的复评名单，2008年译的莫言《生死疲劳》^[63]则获首届纽曼华语文学奖。他近十年出版的译文还有王朔的《千万别把我当人》^[64]，刘恒的《苍河白日梦》^[65]，莫言的《酒国》^[66]、《师傅越来越幽默》^[67]，《丰乳肥臀》^[68]，阿来的《尘埃落定》^[69]（与林丽君合译），贾平凹的《浮躁》^[70]和苏童的《碧奴》^[71]。他还跟爱荷华州立大学教授穆爱莉（Mu Aili）和香港岭南大学博士赵茱莉（Julie Chiu）合作编选、翻译了《喧闹的麻雀：中国当代小小说选集》（Loud SparrowsContemporary Chinese Short Shorts）^[72]。即将出版的还有《莫言小说选：英汉对照版》^[73]。

另一位多产的译者是剑桥大学的茱莉亚·洛弗尔（Julia Lovell），近年在美国出版的译作有阎连科的中篇小说《为人民服务》^[74]、张爱玲的《色·戒》^[75]、朱文的《我爱美元》^[76]和韩少功的《马桥词典》^[77]。

近年作品被翻译最多的大陆作家除莫言外还有余华。加州波莫纳大学（Pomona College）教授艾伦（Allan H.Barr）翻译了他的《在细雨中呼喊》^[78]，加州大学圣巴巴拉校区教授白睿文（又名白瑞克，Michael Berry）翻译了他的《活着》^[79]和《1937年的爱情》^[80]，加大伯克利分校教授安道（Andrew F.Jones）翻译了他的《许三观卖血记》^[81]。安道还是他第一个英译中短篇小说集《往事与刑罚》（The Past and the Punishments）^[82]的译者。最新的译作是哈佛周成荫教授（Eileen Cheng-yin Chow）和杜克大学教授罗鹏（Carlos Rojas）合作翻译的《兄弟》^[83]。此书今年1月27日推出美国英文版（英国英文版4月由麦克米伦公司发行），两个月里，《纽约时报》（The New York Times）、《纽约客》（The New Yorker）、《华盛顿邮报》（The Washington Post）、《洛杉矶时报》（Los Angeles Times）、《波士顿环球报》（Boston Globe）、《时代》周刊（Time）和《新闻周刊》（Newsweek），以及加拿大《国家邮报》（National Post）等北美主流媒体热评如潮，美国全国公共广播电台（NPR）也广播了美国大牌评论家的评论，其受重视程度可见一斑。

除此以外，较为重要的译本还有安道翻译的张爱玲最享盛名的散文集《流言》^[84]，白容文和陈毓贤（Susan Chan Egan）合译的王安忆《长恨歌》^[85]，陶忘机（John Balcom）译的曹乃谦《到黑夜我想你没办法》^[86]，以及明尼苏达大学亚洲语文系系主任周文龙（Joseph R.Allen）翻译的《梦之海：顾城诗选》（Sea of DreamsThe Selected Writings of Gu Cheng）^[87]。

在中国大陆国门紧闭之时，台湾当代文学在美国红极一时，尤以“文革”期间为最，有台湾文学为中国文学代表之势。这可以从台大外文系彭镜禧教授主编的《当代台湾文学作品英译本索引（初稿）》（台湾文化建设委员会，1997—2009）^[88]窥见一斑。此索引涵盖自1949年至1997年8月已出版之英译台湾文学作品，包括诗、长篇小说、短篇小说、戏剧、散文以及上述文类之选集，共五大类、3 337条。这一势头在大陆改革开放之后稍缓，但在翻译方面仍有大陆尚不及之处。以大陆人口之众多、创作之繁荣而言，对外的译介不成比例，相形而见绌。他们的优势是海外有学界权威推动，岛内有政府财力支持，加上译界高手多为当年在台留过学、至今仍有紧密联系者。下面看两个例子。

一个是哥伦比亚大学出版社的《台湾现代华语文学》（Modern Chinese Litera-ture from Taiwan）英译项目。这是王德威先生1996年还在哥大任教时，邀得蒋经国国际学术交流基金会赞助，跟原台大教授齐邦媛和瑞典马悦然（Goran Malmqvist）教授三人主持的。他们运用多年的阅读经验与研究心得，选择台湾具有代表性的长篇小说，邀请翻译高手译介给英文世界。近年出版的作品有吴敏嘉（Michelle M.Wu）译的萧丽红《千江有水千江月》^[89]，白睿文译的张大春《野孩子》^[90]，陶忘机译的李乔《寒夜》^[91]，葛浩文译的黄春明《苹果的滋味》^[92]，陶忘机译的张系国《城三部曲：五玉碟，龙城飞将，一羽毛》^[93]，葛浩文译的李永平《吉陵春秋》^[94]，林丽君、葛浩文译的施叔青《香港三部曲》^[95]，陶忘机、黄瑛姿（Yingtsih Balcom）编译的《原住民文学》^[96]，约安尼斯·门察斯（Ioannis Mentzas）译的吴浊流《亚细亚孤儿》^[97]，杜南馨（Nancy Du）译的平路《行道天涯》^[98]，瓦莱丽·贾菲（Valerie Jaffee）译的张贵兴《我思念的长眠中的南国公主》^[99]，葛浩文译的朱天心《古都》^[100]，陶忘机译的郭松棻《奔跑的母亲》^[101]。计划出版的还有骆以军的《月球姓氏》，蔡素芬的《盐田儿女》和吴继文的《天河撩乱》等。

另一个是杜国清教授主持的《台湾文学英译丛刊》（Taiwan Literature：English Translation Series）项目。此项目获台湾文建会资助，自1996年起，将新近在台湾出版的有关台湾文学的声音，亦即台湾本地的作家和研究者对台湾文学本身的看法，介绍给英语的读者，以期促进国际对台湾文学的发展和动向的认识。该丛刊每年出版两期，每期有一个重点或主题，内容包括评论、小说、散文、诗作和研究，由加州大学圣巴巴拉分校跨学科人文科学中心属下世华文学研究中心负责选稿、翻译和出版。跟上述哥伦比亚大学出版社的《台湾现代华语文学》英译项目结合，台湾文学在英语世界便得到了比较全面的反映。至于当代大陆作家作品的翻译，所幸美国有那么一批学者，不计投入和回报的不平衡而孜孜不倦地各自努力，才有如上所述的成绩。

[4]《汉籍外译史》受到不少批评，如“国学数典论坛”上的“《汉籍外译史》指瑕”一文，说它“在材料的使用以及论述上都有不规范和不准确的地方”（http://bbs.gxsd.com.cn/redirect.php？Tid＝279144＆goto＝lastpast，2009/8/3）；严武的“《汉籍外译史》指谬”则主要针砭书中人名、书名等的误译和混乱（《译林》2007年第05期）。作者想一网打尽，难免顾此失彼。文献整理吃力而不讨好，不必苛求，但引用时需查证。王著则专注于小说、戏曲，并止于古典，又出得较早，需要更新。
