美国汉学从大的方面可以分为两个时期——业余汉学时期和专业汉学时期。以时间点为界限，则可以把美国汉学分成更为清晰的三个时期，即：早期（1877年前）、中期（1877—1928）、后期（1929年后）。近三十年来国内外学者对二战后的美国汉学做了广泛的研究。在这样的现状之下应该加强对20世纪前半期以及20世纪以前的美国汉学史的研究。
Broadly speaking，American sinology can be divided into two periods：amateur and professional.In terms of point of time，it can be more clearly divided into three periods，namely：early（before 1877），middle（1877—1928），late （after 1929）.In the past three decades，Chinese and foreign scholars have done extensive study of the history of American sinology after World War II，it is suggested，under such a current situation，that more research should be conducted on American sinology of the first half of the 20th century and earlier.
