第一部分　技能总述

在第十四单元中，我们已经提到有关视译的定义、基本要求、首要原则及视译的几点重要技巧，在此我们不再重复。值得注意的是，英汉句法和句子结构的差异在一定程度上影响了视译的操作。上一单元主要介绍被动语态、同位语从句、定语从句和长句的视译技巧，本单元将继续介绍when从句、with结构、比较级和it作形式主语四种句式在视译中常用的翻译技巧。

when从句虽说根据when的字面意思“当……时候”是一个时间状语从句，但在某些情况下，when只是起到了一个引导词的作用，并非都表示“时间”，因此，when从句应视句子意思而译；

这里提到的with结构指的是伴随状语或独立主格的引导词，with这个词有很多含义，正是因其有很多含义，所以视译时应根据句子意思来译，其前后意思连贯即可；

比较级有很多种形式。在这里，我们讲解as... as和than连接的两种形式。我们知道，as... as和than都是前后连接两个成分，翻译时句意要以后面的成分作比较来译，但鉴于视译的顺译原则，需将以than和as引导的部分分离开来，作为独立成分，另起一句处理。

以it作形式主语的句子，真实主语往往比较长，这也正是英语句子要使用一个线性主语it的主要原因之一。鉴于真实主语较长，考虑到视译的语序原则，视译时，以it作形式主语引导的句子在大部分情况下，应添加一些词，既可按照视译顺译的要求又可使句意连贯、紧凑。

第二部分　技巧解析

例句1　Men’s preference for meat explains why men have more cases than women when it comes to high cholesterol.

视译时遇到when从句应如何翻译？例句1中，when并非表示“时间”只是一个引出语。因此，视译时，建议将when前后合为一句，意合即可。所以这句话可以译为：“男人喜欢吃肉，这一点表明男人更易患高胆固醇。”鉴此，视译时遇到when从句时，若when的意义表示为时间，可以翻译成时间概念，若不然，建议译者没有必要强调when的表面意思“时间”概念，只需将when所在的句子翻译的通顺恰当即可。

例句2　Men and women have different tastes in food,with men favoring meat and poultry,and women fruits and vegetables.

视译时遇到with结构应如何翻译？例句2中的with仅仅是独立主格的引导词，并无实际意义，视译时不用考虑with的译法。因此这句话就可以直接译成：“男人和女人口味不同，男人喜欢吃肉和禽类，而女人喜欢水果和蔬菜。”with省略不翻，但整句话意思完整无损。英语中常出现with结构。视译时应根据with前后意思来适当翻译。

例句3　Shopping at a supermarket is cheaper than going to the local shop.

视译时遇到比较级应如何翻译？例句3可译成：“在超市购物比较便宜，而在当地商店购物比较贵。”从译文中我们可以看出，than后面独立成句。视译时，中文的意合可以让我们比较从容地使用两个并列的句子将比较级的两个部分分别译出，这样那个就可以遵循顺译的基本原则了。再比如，She looks as beautiful as 3 years ago. 在做视译的时候，我们还是尽量不要调整语序，往往将这种句子分成两个类意群，即She looks as beautiful//as 3 years ago. 然后依照顺序译成两个独立的成分：“她看上去很漂亮，像三年前一样漂亮。”另外，no one + v. + 比较级+than + sb. 这个句子表面看上去是than引导的比较级句式，但意义是最高级。视译时，先将比较级后面的中心句翻译出来，然后加入一些词连接than后面的主语，译成最高级形式。比如，No one knows better the country’s affection for fat food than Lydia.这句话的中心句是the country’s affection for fattening food，先将这个中心句单独译出，然后将than后面的主语Lydia提出译成最高级。亦即这个句子可以译成：“这个国家热衷于高脂肪食物，这一点利蒂亚最了解。这个句子中加入了“这一点”连接than前后两句，按照顺序译出，意思通顺。

例句4　It was interesting that there were some differences.

视译时遇到it作形式主语应如何翻译？例句4可以译成：“有趣的是还存在一些差异。”例句4是一个以it作形式主语的句子，真实主语是that 从句。我们先将主语和谓语译为“有趣的是”，然后将真实主语依次译出。这是it+ be + adj.。It + be + n. 也同样如此。比如，It is a pity/a shame that 可以译成：“可惜的是……/遗憾的是……”，然后将that从句依次译出。还有一类it引导的句子，就是it is said/reported that等等，这类句子视译时，通常使用“据”字句或“人们……”来翻译，更符合汉语习惯。比如，It was said that 8 000 people were killed in the earthquake. 这句话可以译成：“据说/人们说，8 000人死于这场地震。汉语的“是”字句在视译中十分有用。另外，需要注意的是，英语中为了避免重复，在多次提到一个事物时常用it代替，而汉语则将主语翻译出来，这样，句子不但能够按照原来的语序顺译，也更符合汉语习惯。

First of all,on behalf of the Ministry of Commerce (MOFCOM),I would like to thank all the friends present at this press conference of the 104th session of China Import and Export Fair,or the Guangzhou Fair. Hereby,I will brief you on the latest information of the Guangzhou Fair that enjoys a long history and has never been interrupted over the past 50-odd years.

With the development of China’s foreign trade and the growth of the Guangzhou Fair in the recent 30 years,the duration of the Fair was adjusted from one phase of 15 days into two phases of 12 days at the 91st session held in the spring of 2002,highlighting the feature of“one location,one complex and two phases”. At the 95th session in 2004 when the Phase I Project of Pazhou Complex was officially put into use,the Fair started an operational mode of“two locations,two complexes and two phases”. The 104th session of the Guangzhou Fair to be opened on October 15 this year will undergo another major reform,which can be simply described as “one location,one complex and three phases”. “One location and one complex”means that as of the 104th session,the Guangzhou Fair will be held exclusively in the newly-completed and modernized Pazhou Complex. “Three phases” means that the Fair will be divided into three 5-day phases based on the consideration of specialization.

Chinese scientists researching magnetic levitation technology for train transportation announced recently that they have made a breakthrough.

Global Warming Signs Stronger in Antarctica

Signs of global warming are three times more apparent in Antarctica than across the rest of the planet,a new study shows.

Using newly digitized temperature,humidity,and wind data collected from instruments aboard weather balloons between 1971 and 2003,scientists found a winter season warming throughout the Antarctic atmosphere.

The scientists estimate that atmospheric temperatures over Antarctica in the winter have risen by about 2.7 degrees Fahrenheit (1.5 degrees Celsius) in the last 30 years,and the change is due in large part to greenhouse gas emissions.

Another previous study even suggested that parts of Antarctica were cooling in recent decades while the rest of the globe was warming.

Unlike these other studies,the current one looks at temperature variations away from the Earth’s surface and also covers a wider area.

Analyzing nearly continuous data collected from nine weather stations over the past 30 years,the researchers concluded that Antarctica’s air is indeed heating up.

Turner warns that the warming could affect Antarctica’s snowfall and sea level in ways not predicted by current models.

“Current climate model simulations don’t reproduce the observed warming,pointing to weaknesses in their ability to represent the Antarctic climate system,” he said. “Our next step is to try to improve the models.”
