第八节　试析假拟分裂句

《大学英语》(文理科本科用)教材里多处出现下面类似的句子：

What makes it rather disturbing was the arbitrary circumstances both of my arrest and my subsequent fact in court．

令人烦恼的是那围绕着我的被捕以及随后法庭上审讯出现武断专横的情况。

这种Wh-type强调句被称为假拟分裂句。它与分裂句，即it-type强调句一样，把强调的力量集中放在一个句子的某一个成分上。为了帮助理解，本节试作如下介绍：

一、假拟分裂句可用来强调主语、宾语和表语

例如：

But what surprised me most was to see some of the village people seated on the benches at the end of the classroom．

然而，最使我奇怪的是看到村子里一些人坐在教室后面的长凳上。

What the machine needs is repairing．

机器所需要的就是修理。

二、假拟分裂句还可以使用代动词do来强调谓语动词(间或不定式)，这是借助于句中do的各种时、体形式来代替句中的动作动词。把动作动词放在主语补语的位置上来加以强调

例如：

What the pupils did was(to)elect him monitor of the class．

学生们所做的就是选了他当班长。

What I shall always do is(to)remember the way in which you received us that evening．

我一直要做的就是记住你那晚接待我们的方式。

What they refused to do was(to)fulfil their promise．

他们拒绝做的是履行诺言。

上述例句表明，假拟分裂句的主动词通常是do的一定形式，假拟分裂句的主语补语通常是带to或不带比to不定式结构。若what从句中主动词do以-ing分词形式出现，假拟分裂句的主语补语采取-ing分词结构。若what从句中主动词是个-ed分词，假拟分裂句的主语补语可采取带to的不定式结构、不带to的不定式结构、-ed分词结构等三种形式。因此，有的语法书指出，假拟分裂句中作主语补语的非限定动词与what从句的时态有联系。例如：

What she has been doing for years is studying linguistics．

他多年一直在干的工作就是研究语言学。

What he has done is to give/her a birthday present．

他已做的就是给了她一件生日礼物。

三、假拟分裂句可以有两种形式出现，即“What从句+be+被强调成分”的形式或“被强调成分+be+what从句”的形式

例如：

What he could not do was repair the machine．或To repair the machine was what he could not do．他所不能干的就是修理机器。

一般是以what从句作主语的情况居多，若what从句过长，被强调成分较短，用what从句作主语补语为好。又例如：

This was what they had posted on the bulletin board then!

原来贴在布告牌上的就是这么回事!

四、假拟分裂句局限性较大，其原因是假拟分裂句中常用的名词性关系从句是what从句，只是偶尔由when或where引起，但它们通常只能作主语补语

例如：

Home is where I like to stay．家是我喜欢呆的地方。

(On)Saturday is when the housewives are busiest．星期六是家庭主妇们最忙的日子。
