China attaches great importance to providing legal protection for females.In 1950 the Central People's Government issued a marriage law，which already specified the rights and responsibilities of both husbands and wives.This provides us with a picture of today's new family.
The first constitution adopted in 1953 has an equal rights clause.It declares，“Women enjoy equal rights with men in all spheres of political，economic，cultural，social，and family life.Men and women enjoy equal pay for equal work.Men and women shall marry of their own will.The state protects marriage，the family，and the mother and child.The state advocates and encourages family planning.”
In 1992 the Fifth Session of the Seventh National People's Congress approved the People's Republic of China Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women(《妇女权益保护法》).This law further enhanced the social status of women and guaranteed their basic rights and interests.
