2　什么是风水?　What is Fengshui?

Ancient Chinese traditionally believed that the movements of the sun and moon affected spiritual currents that influenced people's daily lives.This“cosmic breath”is known as Fengshui(wind and water，风水).It is said that it was also affected by the form and size of hills and mountains，the height and shape of buildings，and by the direction of roadways.Ancient people were aware of the importance of geomancy(divination by means of lines and figures)in the location and orientation of buildings and other structures.

Geomancy began during the Zhou Dynasty(1046 BC—256 BC).A manual codifying of the rules of the art was published around 320.In addition to determining the orientation of buildings and doors，the Fengshui masters also countered the influence of negative cosmic breath by the use talismans(dragons and other symbols)on buildings and other structures and charms(power words and other inscriptions)on paper scrolls or tablets.
