二、说明书的翻译

（一）关于说明书

商品说明书（Instructions，Directions或Descriptions）或使用手册（Manual），是与商品附在一起的一种宣传资料，主要是向消费者介绍商品的成分、性能、使用、保养、维修的说明性文件。一份成功有效的说明书不仅可以起到良好的广告宣传作用，激起消费者的购买欲望，同时也对消费者今后正确使用该产品起到一定的提示作用。

（二）说明书与广告的区别

说明书与广告的主要区别如下：

1.广告的主要目的是推销商品，而说明书则主要介绍有关知识以指导消费者如何正确使用和保养，当然也可起到推销商品的“副”作用。

2.广告有时要介绍商品的特点、性能、用法，但用的是概括说明，而商品说明书则要详加说明，务必使人看懂会用。

3.广告为了吸引人，可以写得花哨一些，用点艺术手法，而说明书只要消费者能看懂，因此写得较平实。

4.广告突出商品的优点，而说明书除了说明商品的优点外，还要说明注意事项、如何保养或可能出现的问题。

（三）说明书的主要构成部分

由于商品的种类涉及不同的领域，各类商品的性能及用途不相同，因此各种商品说明书的内容与构成也就有所不同。例如：药品说明书一般包括成分、主治、用法及用量、注意事项、禁忌及副作用等；电子产品说明书通常包括产品的特征、性能、规格指标、操作程序以及注意事项等。但是，商品说明书的性质决定了不同种类的说明书具有一定的共性。一般来说，商品说明书不可或缺的部分是：

1.产品的特征、功能或成分；

2.使用方法；

3.注意事项。

（四）说明书的特点与翻译

1.句子结构简单

说明书主要以简单句为主，较少使用复杂的复合句。常使用祈使句和被动语态，还经常使用省略了主语或主谓结构的短语，时态用一般现在时，因此，说明书的翻译一般都尽量用简洁、通俗易懂的文体。

例1

CAUTION：

Do not turn on electrical current to water heater until tank has been completely filled with water.Open several hot water faucets to allow air to escape from the system while the heater is filling.The heating elements will burn out if not immersed in water heater.

注意：

在热水器储水罐灌满水之前，不要打开电源开关。在往热水器储水罐注水的同时，把热水水龙头打开，使得热水管道中的气体能够排出。如果热水器内没有足够的储水量，电热元件可能会被烧坏。

以上是某热水器说明书中的一段注意事项，由三个句子组成。第一、二句都使用了祈使句；第一句的状语从句中使用了被动语态。三个句子后部各有一个状语从句，其中第三个是省略了主语和谓语动词be的条件状语从句。为了把意思表达清楚，译文在语序上、语法上作了调整，以符合汉语的习惯。第三句的主动语态，翻译时采用了被动语态。

例2

SAFETY WARNING：

When lifting lever of pressure relief valve，hot water will be released under pressure.Be certain that any released water does not result in bodily injury or property damage.The magnesium anode rod should be inspected periodically and replaced when necessary to prolong tank life.

安全注意事项：

扳动减压安全阀把手，热水将在压力下释放出来。要确保任何释放出来的热水不会导致任何人体伤害或财产损失。应该定期检查阳极棒，为了延长热水器的使用寿命，在必要时，更换阳极棒。

以上一段安全注意事项由三个句子组成，第一、三句都使用省略了主谓结构的短语以及被动语态。汉语译文省略了第二人称主语，而且把被动语态翻译成汉语中常用的主动语态。

2.条款式排列

有的说明书包含的项目较多，因此常以条款式排列，使其内容一目了然。

例3

3.Push in Crown to A position.

To set the calendar/date：

1.Pull out Crown to B position.

2.Turn Crown away from you to correct date.

Automatic Massage Modes

7.Press and hold the“Power/Time”button for 2 seconds to turn off the device.

翻译编号条款式排列的说明书时，要保留原文的号码顺序，达到从语言形式和内容上与原文一致。此外，翻译说明书时，通常采用直译法。

3.语言客观、不夸大

说明书的目的是让消费者了解商品的性能和特征等，以便让他们作出恰当的选择并正确使用该商品，所以，其内容真实、语言客观、简明扼要、通俗易懂。

4.语言偶有文学性特征

说明书也起着广告的作用，有时为了增加可读性和感染力也会使用带有文学色彩的语言进行描述。所以，说明书中会用到一些形容词，但说明书中的形容词是恰当、如实反映商品情况的，所以在翻译这类词语时必须适当把握和运用，准确地传递原文的意思。

例6　Lacovo，scientifically prepared with choice ingredients including malt extract，milk，powder cocoa，fresh butter and eggs，is rich in vitamins A，B，D and organic phosphorous.It promotes health and aids convalescence and is especially good for neurasthenia and mental exhaustion.Take regularly，and Lacovo helps build up body resistance against disease.A nourishing beverage for all ages.An excellent gift in all seasons.

乐口福采用麦精、牛乳、可可粉、鲜黄油、鲜鸡蛋等上等原料，以科学方法配制而成，含有丰富的维生素A、B、D及天然有机磷质，能增强体质、提神醒脑，对用脑过度、神经衰弱者更适用。常饮本品，可以增强肌体抗病能力。本品实为老少皆宜的营养饮料、适宜四季饮用的馈赠佳品。

以上是说明书中的第一段。除第一句客观地介绍了商品的构成以外，其余三句均带有文学色彩。在翻译这种既使用客观语言描述商品，又使用渲染性语言的说明书时，要把握好汉语译文的分寸，做到译文语言通俗易懂，并恰到好处地运用一些渲染性语言，以达到广告的作用，但要注意不夸大其词。翻译时，既要体现文学色彩，又要实事求是，将原文中不同色彩的语言在译文中再现，以使语义信息和语气风格与原文保持一致。

5.说明书翻译注意事项

在翻译说明书时，应避免不忠实于原文的信息，不可任意添加原文中不存在的信息或任意删去原文中存在的信息。同时，说明书中提到的产品的弱点也必须如实地翻译出来。

现在越来越多的外国商品进入我国市场，消费者参阅商品说明书是了解这些商品的一种快捷的途径。如果将商品说明书里所提供的信息翻译得含糊不清，难以理解，消费者就会失去对该产品的兴趣，不会产生购买的欲望。由此可见，在翻译商品说明书时，要力求译文简洁、准确、严谨，完整体现原文信息。

翻译实践

将下列说明书译成汉语。

1.WARNING：

Do not use or store gasoline or other flammable vapors（可燃气体），liquids，or materials in the vicinity of this water heater.

2.Medicine Directions

Take two tablets with warm water，followed by one tablet every eight hours，as required.Do not exceed six tablets in twenty－four hours.

For children six to twelve years old，give half the adult dosage.For children under six years old consult your doctor.

Reduce dosage（剂量）if nervousness，restlessness，or sleeplessness occurs.
