Friends will get along well if they share common interests and have similar temperament.Otherwise they will separate and break off their relations.Even the most intimate friends cannot be too casual and show no respect to each other.Otherwise the harmony and balance will be broken, and the friendship will cease to exist.Everyone hopes to guard his or her own privacy, but if friends are not considerate enough of others,it is easy for them to invade this forbidden area, which will lead to conflict, resulting in estrangement. It may sometimes be a small matter to be rude to friends, but a destructive seed may have been planted. The best way to keep a close relationship with friends is to keep contacts with restraint and not to meddle in the private affairs of each other.

Mobile phones have altered human relations. There is usually a note on the door of a conference room, which reads“Please switch off your mobile phones”.However, the rings are still resounding in the room.We are all common people and have few urgencies to deal with.Still,we are reluctant to turn off the phone.Mobile phones symbolize our connection with the world and reflect our“thirst for socialization.”We are familiar with the scene in which a person stops his or her steps to edit short messages with eyes fixed on his or her phone, whether in the middle of the road or beside a toilet.

(4)“惶惶不可终日”是成语,翻译出意思即可,可翻译为“be in a constant state of anxiety”或“suffer from nervous fears”。

I think everyone,in fact, has a small garden of his or her own, namely, our inner worlds.Human intelligence needs to be developed,so does the inner world. What distinguishes between human beings and animals, apart from the various aspects which are universally known, may probably be the fact that human beings have an inner world.Heart is no more than an important organ whereas the inner world constitutes a landscape, which gradually takes its shape under the continuous influence from the outside world.Everyone attaches such great importance to the physical condition of his or her own heart or those of his or her closest and dearest ones that merely a minor disease would cause nervous fears. But not everyone is concerned about his or her own inner world and those of their beloved ones.

Beside this picture with profuse colors, agroup of sheep are lowering their heads, eating by the river bank.Hardly any of them would spare some time to raise their eyes to have a glance at the beautiful dusk. They are, perhaps, making use of every minute to enjoy their last chew before being driven home. This is a picture of the Yellow River bank,in which the shepherd disappears, and no one knows where he is resting himself.Only the sheep,as free creatures, are joyfully enjoying the dusk. The exuberant water plants have nurtured the sheep, keeping them plump. When approaching, you would see their snow-white teeth and rich innocent facial impressions.

Since ancient times the Chinese nationalities have never considered human beings to be superior to every other species. As is reflected in Chinese philosophy, literature and art,in the natural world human beings occupy aproportionally proper rather than an absolutely dominant position to all other creatures. Therefore, generally speaking,we Chinese suffer less depression than people in the west, for the intensity of one’s depression literally changes along with the expansion of one’s desire and ambition. As people in an agricultural society enjoy much fewer comforts than those in an industrial society, they have much smaller desires or wishes.Besides, ancient Chinese always took it as their most fundamental philosophy of life that one should not merely be confined to material pursuits,or be kept in bondage by material things.

第一句可用“what is”或“how meaningful”来提问。分别为“What is the significance of life on earth?”或“How meaningful after all is a person’s life?”

How meaningful after all is a person’s life?Is there any standard to measure one’s life?Of course,it is very difficult to put forward an absolute criterion. But it is not very hard to make a proper judgment of the meaning of a person’s existence if we broadly check whether he adopts a serious attitude towards his life and how he treats his work.

Since ancient times, all successful people have adopted an earnest attitude towards their lives. So long as he lives,a successful person always does his best to work more, learn more and achieve more.He will not live a useless life by idling away his time. This is quite true of the laboring people as well as great statesmen, great thinkers, and the like throughout the past ages.

We should not be too romantic on the issue of interpersonal relations.

(4)“赞不绝口”是成语,意为“不住口地称赞”,用意译法翻译为“be profuse in praise”或“be full of praise”。

We should not be too romantic on the issue of interpersonal relations.Human beings are very interesting in that when they get into contact with someone, they tend to see first of all his or her strong points. This much resembles our experience of dining in a restaurant. When we start to eat the first dish or the appetizer,we are very positively impressed. When we eat the first two main courses,we are full of praise on them.Yet as we continue to eat more and more dishes,we become less and less enthusiastic. And when we are through with the dinner,we have found out all the defects. As a result,we become angry instead of being happy;we start to blame and find faults instead of proceeding with praises;we shake our heads instead of nodding. Why?This is because:first, when you begin eating, you are very hungry;for a hungry man, chaff tastes as sweet as honey, while for a man who is full, even honey does not taste sweet at all.

One spring evening,my parents held a Banquet in the garden, where all sorts of flowers were in full bloom. In no time,a crowd of their guests collected and laughter was heard all over there.

One spring evening, when all sorts of flowers were in full bloom in the garden,my parents held a banquet, and in no time,a crowd of their guests collected, whose laughter was heard all over there.

Before I fell ill,I had been spoiled by my parents, and I could have my way at home.Once I was isolated and confined in a chamber on the hillside of the garden,I suddenly felt I was neglected and became very depressed. One spring evening,my parents held a banquet in the garden, where all sorts of flowers were in full bloom. In no time,a crowd of their guests collected and laughter was heard all over there.I,without being noticed, lifted the curtain in my small room, only to catch sight of a bustling and exciting world down in the garden, where my elder sisters, brothers and my cousins, each full of the joys of spring, were shuttling among the guests.Quickly enough, seized by the anger of being deserted by all the people and the world,I could not help crying my heart out.

(3)“做礼拜”意为“go to church”,所以应和“祈祷”调换位置,翻译为“go to church and pray”显得更为自然.

Nature endows all people with the same favor, whether they are rich or poor. Therefore, all people alike are dependent on nature equally profoundly. This is particularly true of rural people, who have lived an unchanged life for nearly a thousand years in the country. They grow crops and grapes, make wine to drink, raise cattle and milk cows, weed gardens and plant flowers. At weekend, they go to church to pray.During holidays, they go to open squares, where they play musical instruments, dance and sing songs.Rural farms of the past continue to be their sweet homeland. Thus, each place has had its own legends,by which customs have passed down from generation to generation.

“好环境便会给人好心情”中,“给”不可直接译为“give”,要注意搭配,可译为“fills one’s heart with joy”或“keep people in a good mood”。

(4)“钓鱼可分三个阶段”可翻译为“Fishing falls into three stages”。

Qiao Yu took to fishing in his old age.He said:“Where there is fish and water, there is a good environment, and a good environment fills one’s heart with joy.I think the best place for fishing is not a comfortable man-made fish-pond where hungry fish are provided for you,but an enchanting naturally-formed place in the wild.”Fishing is a game that can help improve one’s temperament. It is good for mental and bodily health.Qiao Yu said:“Fishing falls into three stages. The first stage is just for eating fish. The second stage is for enjoying the pleasure of fishing as well as eating fish. The third stage is mainly for the pleasure of fishing.Facing apool of green water, one can forget all anxieties and worries and relax himself fully, both mentally and physically.”

The first-generation museums in the world are museums of natural history. With fossils and specimens they introduce to people the evolution of the earth and various living organisms on it.

The first-generation museums in the world are museums of natural history, which introduce to people the evolution of the earth and various living organisms on it through fossils and specimens.

The first-generation museums in the world are museums of natural history. With fossils and specimens they introduce to people the evolution of the earth and various living organisms on it.The second-generation museums are those of industrial technologies.Achievements at various stages of industrial civilization are on display here.Although these two generations of museums have played the role of spreading scientific knowledge, they regard visitors as passive spectators.

The world’s third-generation museums are those designed with new concepts. Here visitors can operate the exhibits with their own hands and observe with their own eyes.In this way they come closer to advanced achievements in science and technology to probe their mystery.

I thought that it was a Sunday morning in May,that it was Easter Sunday, and as yet very early in the morning.I was standing at the door of my own cottage.Right before me lay the very scene which could really be commanded from that situation, but exalted,as was usual, and solemnized by the power of dreams. There were the same mountains, and the same lovely valley at their feet;but the mountains were raised to more than Alpine height, and there was interspace far larger between them of meadows and forest lawns;the hedges were rich with white roses;and no living creature was to be seen except that in the green churchyard there were cattle tranquilly reposing upon the graves, and particularly round about the grave of a child whom I had tenderly loved, just as I had really seen them,a little before sunrise in the same summer, when that child died.

I thought that it was a Sunday morning in May,that it was Easter Sunday, and as yet very early in the morning.

Right before me lay the very scene which could really be commanded from that situation, but exalted,as was usual, and solemnized by the power of dreams.

(3)第四句很长,从“There were the same mountains,...” 其中第二个分句but the mountains were raised to more than Alpine height, and there was interspace far larger between them of meadows and forest lawns中,“of meadows and forest lawns”用以限定“interspace”,“between them”是嵌入状语。最后一个分句“and no living creature was to be seen except that in the green churchyard there were cattle tranquilly reposing upon the graves, and particularly round about the grave of a child whom I had tenderly loved, just as I had really seen them,a little before sunrise in the same summer, when that child died.”中,no living creature was to be seen是主句,except that引导一个状语从句。“and particularly round about the grave of a child”如果直译为“(牛群)尤其围绕在一个小孩的墓地的周围”,语义不太通顺,可以换个主语,译成“好几头围绕着一个小孩的坟墓”。

We,the human species, are confronting aplanetary emergency—a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here. But there is hopeful news as well:we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid the worst—though not all—of its consequences,if we act boldly, decisively and quickly.

However, too many of the world’s leaders are still best described in the words of Winston Churchill applied to those who ignored Adolf Hitler’s threat:“They go on in strange paradox, decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, all powerful to be impotent.”

So today,we dumped another 70million tons of global-warming pollution into the thin shell of atmosphere surrounding our planet,as if it were an open sewer. And tomorrow,we will dump a slightly larger amount, with the cumulative concentrations now trapping more and more heat from the sun.

We,the human species, are confronting a planetary emergency—a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here.该句中,破折号之后的中心词“a threat”是“aplanetary emergency”的同位语;“a threat to the survival of our civilization that is gathering ominous and destructive potential even as we gather here”中,“that”引导的定语从句修饰“a threat”。

But there is hopeful news as well:we have the ability to solve this crisis and avoid the worst—though not all—of its consequences,if we act boldly, decisively and quickly.

However,too many of the world’s leaders are still best described in the words of Winston Churchill applied to those who ignored Adolf Hitler’s threat:“They go on in strange paradox, decided only to be undecided, resolved to be irresolute, all powerful to be impotent.”

But,as has been true in many other cases, when they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical.Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, going halves, they discovered that the cares of life had been doubled. This led to some distressing moments for both our friends;they understood suddenly that instead of dwelling in heaven they were still upon earth, and had made themselves slaves to new laws and limitations.Instead of being freer and happier than ever before, they had assumed new responsibilities;they had established a new household, and must fulfill in some way or another the obligations of it.They looked back with affection to their engagement;they had been longing to have each other to themselves, apart from the world, but it seemed they never felt so keenly that they were still units in modern society.

But,as has been true in many other cases, when they were at last married, the most ideal of situations was found to have been changed to the most practical. “the most ideal of situations”可译为“最为憧憬的生活”,“the most practical”可译为“最为实际的现实”。

Instead of having shared their original duties, and as school-boys would say, going halves, they discovered that the cares of life had been doubled.这句话的前半部分是介词词组“instead of”引导的状语,其中的“as school-boys would say”是个插入语;“going halves”表示“一半一半,对半开”。句子主干“they discovered that the cares of life had been doubled”中包含一个宾语从句,“the cares of life”是指“生活中需要操心的事”。

This led to some distressing moments for both our friends;they understood suddenly that instead of dwelling in heaven they were still upon earth, and had made themselves slaves to new laws and limitations. “made themselves slave to”是常见词组,意为“使自己成为……

They looked back with affection to their engagement;they had been longing to have each other to themselves, apart from the world, but it seemed they never felt so keenly that they were still units in modern society.句中的“apart from the world”是插入成分,可译为“远离尘世”;“longing to have each other to themselves”表示渴望彼此只拥有对方,“units”可译为“一份子”。

Scientific and technological advances are enabling us to comprehend the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the most basic constituents of matter, and the miracle of life.

At the same time, today, the actions, and inaction,of human beings imperil not only life on the planet, but the very life of the planet.

Globalization is making the world smaller, faster and richer.Still,9·11and avian flu remind us that a smaller, faster world is not necessarily a safer world.

Our world is bursting with knowledge—but desperately in need of wisdom. Now,when sound bites are getting shorter, when instant messages crowd out essays, and when individual lives grow more crazy, college graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs.

For all these reasons I believed—and I believe even more strongly today—in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.

Scientific and technological advances are enabling us to comprehend the furthest reaches of the cosmos, the most basic constituents of matter, and the miracle of life. “the furthest reaches of the cosmos”中的“reach”是名词,表示“距离,范围”,“the furthest reaches”可译作“边陲”。

At the same time, today, the actions, and inaction,of human beings imperil not only life on the planet, but the very life of the planet.

Now,when sound bites are getting shorter, when instant messages crowd out essays, and when individual lives grow more frenzied, college graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs.这是个长句,其中有三个“when”引导的时间状语从句,“college graduates capable of deep reflection are what our world needs”是主句。

For all these reasons I believed—and I believe even more strongly today—in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.“for”在这里是“鉴于,因为”的意思,破折号之间是插入语,“believe in the unique and irreplaceable mission of universities.”

On May 13,1940,Winston Churchill, the newly appointed British Prime Minister, gave his first speech to Parliament;he was preparing the people for a long battle against Nazi aggression,at a time when England’s survival was still in doubt.

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind.We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering.

You ask, what is our policy?I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air.War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us,and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime.

You ask, what is our aim?I can answer in one word.It is victory.Victory at all costs—victory in spite of all terrors—for without victorythere is no survival.

Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire,no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for,no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall move forward toward his goal.

I take my task in buoyancy and hope.I feel sure that our cause will not be suffered to fail among men.I feel entitled at this juncture,at this time,to claim the aid of all and to say,“Come then, let us go forward together with our united strength.”

I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. We have before us an ordeal of the most grievous kind.We have before us many, many months of struggle and suffering.

You ask, what is our policy?I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air.War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us,and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime.这一段由两个短句和一个长句组成,在长句中有一个名词短语“War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us,”和一个不定式结构“to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime,”进一步说明和强调以什么方式去作战,去和什么样的敌人作战。

(3)第四段“You ask, what is our aim?I can answer in one word.It is victory.Victory at all costs—victory in spite of all terrors—for without victory there is no survival.”

(4)第五段“Let that be realized. No survival for the British Empire,no survival for all that the British Empire has stood for,no survival for the urge, the impulse of the ages, that mankind shall move forward toward his goal.” 后面的三个“no survival for...”

It is simple enough to say that since books have classes—fiction, biography, poetry—we should separate them and take from each what it is right that each should give us.Yet few people ask from books what books can give us.Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true,of poetry that it shall be false,of biography that it shall be flattering,of history that it shall enforce our own prejud ices.If we could banish all such preconceptions when we read, that would be an admirable beginning.Do not dictate to your author;tryto become him.Be his fellow-worker and accomplice. If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from gettingthe fullest possible value from what you read. But if you open your mind as widely as possible, then signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other.Steep yourself in this, acquaint yourself with this, and soon you will find that your author is giving you,or attempting to give you, something far more definite.

这段材料选自 英国著名作家和文学评论家弗吉尼亚·伍尔夫的散文“How Should One Read a Book?”

第二句“Yet few people ask from books what books can give us.”

(2)第三句“Most commonly we come to books with blurred and divided minds, asking of fiction that it shall be true,of poetry that it shall be false,of biography that it shall be flattering,of history that it shall enforce our own prejudices.”是个长句,其主干是“we come to books with blurred and divided minds”,“asking of fiction that...”

(3)第七句“If you hang back, and reserve and criticize at first, you are preventing yourself from getting the fullest possible value from what you read.”其中,“hang back”表示“犹豫,畏缩不前”,这里可以译为“刻意与作者拉开距离”,“reserve”表示“持保留意见”,“getting the fullest possible value from what you read”可译为“最大限度地从书中获益”。

(4)最后一句“But if you open your mind as widely as possible, then signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness, from the twist and turn of the first sentences, will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other.”是一个带有条件状语从句“If you open your mind as widely as possible”的长句,整个句子的主语是“signs and hints of almost imperceptible fineness”,意思是“极其细微、几乎难以觉察的迹象和暗示”;“will bring you into the presence of a human being unlike any other”是整个句子的谓语部分,可译为“会把你带入一个与众不同的人的精神世界。”

For me the most interesting thing about a solitary life, and mine has been that for the last twenty years,is that it becomes increasingly rewarding. When I can wake up and watch the sun rise over the ocean,as I do most days, and know that I have an entire day ahead, uninterrupted,in which to write a few pages, take a walk with my dog, read and listen to music,I am flooded with happiness.

I am lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when for the time being I feel emptyand need filling up.And I am lonelysometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot,and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out.

Then for a little while the house feels huge and empty, and I wonder where my self is hiding. It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and, perhaps,by looking again at each one as though it were a person.

It takes a while,as I watch the surf blowing up in fountain, but the moment comes when the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowlyunderstood.

(1)第二段第一句“I am lonely only when I am overtired, when I have worked too long without a break, when for the time being I feel empty and need filling up.”

(2)第二段第二句“And I am lonely sometimes when I come back home after a lecture trip, when I have seen a lot of people and talked a lot,and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out.” “and am full to the brim with experience that needs to be sorted out”意思是“满脑子都是需要梳理的感受”。

(3)第三段第二句“It has to be recaptured slowly by watering the plants and, perhaps,by looking again at each one as though it were a person.”中,“it”指代“my self”,“each one”指代“each plant”。

It takes a while,as I watch the surf blowing up in fountain, but the moment comes when the world falls away, and the self emerges again from the deep unconscious, bringing back all I have recently experienced to be explored and slowly understood.这个句子由一个从句“as I watch the surf blowing up in fountain”和两个主句“It takes a while”、“but the moment comes”构成,第二个主句中又有一个“when”引导的时间状语从句。

In his classic novel,“The Pioneers”,James Fenimore Cooper has his hero,a land developer, take his cousin on a tour of the city he is building. He describes the broad streets, rows of houses,a teeming metropolis. But his cousin looks around bewildered. All she sees is a forest.“Where are the beauties and improvements which you were to show me?”she asks. He’s astonished she can’t see them.“Where! Why everywhere,”he replies. For though they are not yet built on earth,he has built them in his mind, and they are as concrete to him as if they were already constructed and finished.

Cooper was illustrating a distinctly American trait, futuremindedness:the ability to see the present from the vantage point of the future;the freedom to feel unencumbered by the past and more emotionally attached to things to come.As Albert Einstein once said,“Life for the American is always becoming, never being.”

In his classic novel,“The Pioneers”,James Fenimore Cooper has his hero,a land developer, take his cousin on a tour of the city he is building.这句的主要结构是“has sb.do sth.”。

James Fenimore Cooper,

(2)第一段第二句中,“the broad streets,rows of houses,a teeming metropolis”在结构上是并列的,但在逻辑上,“a teeming metropolis”是个整体概念,所以在翻译时最好加译为“俨然一座熙熙攘攘的大都市”。

(3)第一段第五句:“Where are the beauties and improvements which you were to show me?”she asks.

(4)第一段第六句“He’s astonished she can’t see them.”

(5)第二段第一句“Cooper was illustrating a distinctly American trait,future-mindedness:the ability to see the present from the vantage point of the future;the freedom to feel unencumbered by the past and more emotionally attached to things to come.”

As Albert Einstein once said,“Life for the American is always becoming, never being.”

The word“winner”and“loser”have many meanings. When we refer to a person as a winner,we do not mean one who makes someone else to lose.To us,a winner is one who responds authentically by being credible, trustworthy, responsive, and genuine, both as an individual and as a member of a society.

Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be;rather, theyare themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating others. They are aware that there is difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowdedgeable and acting knowledgeable.Winners do not need to hide behind a mask.

Winners are not afraid to do their own thinkingand to use their own knowledge. They can separate facts from opinions and don’t pretend to have all the answers. They listen to others, evaluate what they say,but come to their own conclusions.Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound,or awed bythem.

Winners do not play“helpless”,nor do they play the blaming game.Instead, they assume responsibilityfor their lives.

(1)第二段第一句“Winners do not dedicate their lives to a concept of what they imagine they should be;rather, they are themselves and as such do not use their energy putting on a performance, maintaining pretence, and manipulating others.”

上半句中“what they imagine they should be”是介词“of”的宾语从句,用来说明“concept”一词。

(2)第二段第二句“They are aware that there is difference between being loving and acting loving, between being stupid and acting stupid, between being knowdedgeable and acting knowledgeable.”

(3)第三段第四句“Although winners can admire and respect other people, they are not totally defined, demolished, bound,or awed by them.”

(4)第四段第一句“Winners do not play‘helpless’,nor do they play the blaming game.”

Possession for its own sake or in competition with the rest of the neighborhood would have been Thoreau’s idea of the low levels. The active discipline of heightening one’s perception of what is enduring in nature would have been his idea of the high. What he saved from the low was time and effort he could spend on the high.Thoreau certainly disapproved of starvation, but he would put into feeding himself only as much effort as would keep him functioning for more important efforts.

Effort is the gist of it.There is no happiness except as we take on life-engaging difficulties.Short of the impossible,as Yeats put it,the satisfaction we get from a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties.Robert Frost was thinking in somethinglike the same terms when he spoke of“The pleasure of taking pains”.The mortal flaw in the advertised version of happiness is in the fact that it purports to be effortless.

We demand difficulty even in our games. We demand it because without difficulty there can be no game.A game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it.The rules of the game are an arbitrary imposition of difficulty. When someone ruins the fun,he always does so by refusing to play bythe rules. It is easier to win at chess if you are free,at your pleasure,to change the wholly arbitrary rules, but the fun is in winning within the rules. No difficulty,no fun.

(2)第二段第三句“Short of the impossible,as Yeats put it,the satisfaction we get from a lifetime depends on how high we choose our difficulties.”

“how high we choose our difficulties”不能机械地译为“我们选择的困难有多高”,而应译为“我们选择的困难有多大”。(3)第二段第四句“Robert Frost was thinking in something like the same terms when he spoke of‘The pleasure of taking pains’.”中,“in…terms”或“in terms of”的意思是“根据,按照”或“以…… “the pleasure of taking pains”可以译为“以苦为乐”。

Robert Frost,

(4)第三段第三句“A game is a way of making something hard for the fun of it.” “of making something hard for the fun of it”用来修饰“way”,“for the fun of it”表示目的。

If people mean anything at all by the expression“untimely death”,they must believe that some deaths run on a better schedule than others.Death in old age is rarely called untimely—a long life is thought to be a full one.But with the passing of a young person, one assumes that the best years lay ahead and the measure of that life was still to be taken.

History denies this,of course.Among prominent summer deaths, one recalls those of MariLyn Monroe and James Deans, whose lives seemed equally brief and complete.Writers cannot bear the fact that poet John Keats died at 26,and only half playfully judge their own lives as failures when they pass that year. The idea that the life cut short is unfulfilled is illogical because lives are measured by the impressions they leave on the world and by their intensity and virtue.

(1)第一段第一句中“some deaths run on a better schedule than others”理解起来并不难,但不好表达。

(2)第一段第三句“But with the passing of a young person, one assumes that the best years lay ahead and the measure of that life was still to be taken.”中的“passing”、“lay ahead”,以及“the measure of that life was still to be taken”需要注意。 “the measure of that life was still to be taken”中,“that life”是指“the life of that young man”,另外可以从Collins COBUILD Advanced Learner’s Dictionary的释义“If you get or take the measure of someone or something, you discover what they are like,so that you are able to control them or deal with them”中知道,“take the measure”是“衡量,评价”的意思。不定式“still to be”常常译为“还没有”。

Among prominent summer deaths, one recalls those of MariLyn Monroe and James Deans, whose lives seemed equally brief and complete.”

(4)第二段第三句“Writers cannot bear the fact that poet John Keats died at 26,and only half playfully judge their own lives as failures when they pass that year.” “and only half playfully judge their own lives as failures when they pass that year”中的“only half”容易理解成“只有一半人”,但显然这个说法是没有依据的。
