歌瑞青·玛涵（Gretchen Mahan）是密苏里新闻学院的本科生，来自美国西南部的德克萨斯州。她长得端庄秀丽，是我所住大楼里的一家教会老板的朋友，经常来教会帮忙。我们的相识就是借助了“神”的帮助。

Freshman Year

Basic classes

Career Exploration in Journalism

This class was a very basic class discussing the different fields within journalism including photojournalism，broadcast and print.

Principles of American Journalism

This class gave a basic overview of journalism in the United States and discussed some of the ethical issues that journalists face.

Sophomore Year

Students must apply to the journalism school and choose a“sequence.”

The six sequences are：

-Strategic Communication：advertising and public relations

-Photojournalism

-Print and Digital Media：Focuses mainly on writing for the newspaper and the web

-Magazine

-Broadcast：Radio and television

-Convergence ：Teaches multimedia skills and allows students to learn the basics of all the sequences while focusing on one of their choice

Fall Semester

J2100—the basic news writing class where students must write several articles for class and are strictly taught the style rules in journalism

J2000—Cross-cultural journalism ：Students are taught how their writing can be offensive to people of different cultures and how to avoid those situations

Spring Semester

Students take the first class in their sequence—this teaches the basic of the sequence and is mostly for class work.There are generally four classes in a sequences.Three general classes and one“Capstone”where the students must create a project.

Junior Year

Sometime during this year，students take Communications Law and History of American Journalism.

Fall Semester

2nd class in sequence

Students do in-class work but also work in the newsroom that corresponds with their sequence.For example ：

-Broadcast students work at KOMU TV and KBIA radio.

-Magazine students ：VOX

-Photojournalism and Print students：Missourian

-Strategic Communications：MOJO—an advertising company

-Convergence：choose several of the above newsrooms

Spring Semester

3rd class in sequence

Students do much of their journalism work in the newsrooms and begin to focus their work more specifically to a certain area of journalism.

Senior Year

Students create a project of their choice based on their sequence.Throughout this time，students must also fulfill a certain number of journalism elective credits，which they can earn through many different classes.

Resources

Journalism students are given some resources while they are at the school.The journalism school has its own library where students can check out books and use the computers or printers for their work.The University also has an online library where students can look up books and articles using their student IDs.Students can also share their work with their professors or other students through the“Classes server.”This is an online，shared file space that people can access if they have a journalism student ID and password.

Many of the professors at the University of Missouri also have connections to various media outlets around the country and the world.The University tries to get people internships if they want to apply for the Washington，New York or another study abroad program.Many of the professors also come from large media organizations and have many contacts in those organizations.However，students must be proactive to make these connections themselves because professors do not openly try to get their students jobs after graduation although they do provide some resources.

学生会基于他们的系列课程通过自己选择的之一来做毕业设计。这段时间自始至终，学生还必须通过选择不同的课程来完成一定数量的新闻学选修学分。

新闻资源

新闻学的学生通常在学校就能得到一些新闻资源。新闻学院有自己的图书馆，在这里学生们可以借书、或者使用电脑或打印机。学校还有一个网上图书馆，这样方便学生用自己的校园ID就可以浏览图书和论文。学生也可以通过“课程服务器”与教授、同学共享他们的成果。

密苏里新闻学院的很多教授也经常举办各式各样的媒介交流会。如果有学生想申请华盛顿、纽约或者其他海外研究项目，学校尽量给他们实习机会。很多教授也是来自知名的传媒机构，跟这些机构有很多联系。但是，学生们必须提前亲自联系，因为尽管教授们有一些资源，但也并不公开帮助他们的学生在毕业后得到这些工作。

My Journalism College Career

My freshman year，many students take basic required classes during this time.I took some of these but was able to start my journalism classes earlier than most because I got into the Walter Williams Scholars，which is a group based on your SAT or ACT score.This group gives students scholarships and allows students to start their journalism work without applying to the journalism school.

My first semester，I took Career Explorations in Journalism and Principles of American Journalism.I also began to write for the school newspaper，The Maneater.This paper is separate from the school but is written and produced by students.My second semester，I took Cross-Cultural Communication and J2100，the basic writing class.I did not write for The Maneater anymore，but began working for KBIA radio outside of class.

My second year，I took J4802，the first class in the Convergence sequence.This class taught us how to use a marantz（the audio recording device），a video camera，and a Nikon camera.During this time，I kept work-ing at KBIA outside of class as a reporter.

In the spring，I studied abroad in Belgium，Brussels and worked at an internship there for the Associated Press.This was all through the University of Missouri study abroad program.I received 9 journalism credits while I was there.

My third year，I took J4804，the second class in the Convergence sequence.Every other week we worked in the newsrooms.I worked at KBIA，the Missourian，and Newsy.com.The other weeks，we worked in teams to produce stories.This semester，I also took Communications Law.

In the spring，I am now taking J4806，the third class in the Convergence sequence.For this class，I worked for Discovery.com to write blogs for their website.I also am working at KBIA as a producer of the weekly science show.I am also taking the Capstone class.This class is normally taken after all the Convergence classes are taken，but my professors let me take the Capstone and J4806 together.I am working with a team to create and maintain The Missouri Abroad Project（missouriabroad.com），which is a website for University of Missouri students and alumni to contribute stories and photos from their experiences around the world.

This May 2011，I will graduate from the University and will be looking for a job.The University only has a limited job fair，so the students are mostly told they will have to find their own jobs when they graduate.

第二年，我选修了J4802，系列课程的第一门。这个课程教我们如何使用marantz（录音设备），录影机和尼康牌相机。这段时间里，我坚持在KBIA做实习记者。

在春季学期，我作为美联社的实习记者在比利时的布鲁塞尔学习。这一切都是通过密苏里新闻学院的交流计划。我最终在那里获得了9个新闻学的学分。
