五、英语习语的翻译

1．直译法

直译法指的是照字面翻译，把英语习语中的形象直接介绍到汉语中来，这种翻译方法能保留英语习语的文化特征，有利于跨文化交际。例如：

to show one’s cards　　　　 摊牌

a stick-and-carrot policy　　大棒加胡萝卜政策

to play with fire　　　　　　玩火

to turn over a new leaf　　　揭开新的一页

crocodile tears　　　　　　　鳄鱼的眼泪

Seeing is believing　　　　　眼见为实

Like father,like son　　　　 有其父必有其子

Knowledge is power　　　　　 知识就是力量

2．套译法

汉语和英语都拥有丰富的习语，有一些英语习语可以在汉语中找到非常相似的对应习语，这时，就可以套用相关的汉语习语来进行翻译。例如：

Kill tow birds with one stone　　　一箭双雕

There is no smoke without fire　　 无风不起浪

Strike while the iron is hot　　　 趁热打铁

Misfortunes never come singly　　　祸不单行

Blood is thicker than water　　　　血浓于水

3．意译法

当直译或套译不能很好地传达英语习语的意义时，可以采用意译的方法将英语习语的含义用通顺的汉语完整地表达出来。例如：

in deep water　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　　陷于困境
