Mount Wuyi(武夷山)
Hello! My friends.
On behalf of the travel agency I warmly welcome you to have a sightseeing of MountWuyi.I hope all of you will enjoy your short stay here.
Now we are going to visit Mount Wuyi. The beautiful MountWuyi, which is located in northern Fujian Province and along the southeast slope of the northern Wuyi Mountain Range,is praised as the most attractive mountain in southeast China. The cliffs and waters of Mount Wuyi are exceptionally attractive. This is the area where southeastern plants are best preserved and is home to many animals near extinction. With a long history of human activity,it is a place where people live in harmony with the nature influenced by the tradition of Chinese Confucianism. In 1988,MountWuyi was protected under World Preservation Zone of Biosphere Protection Act.In 1999 it was added by UNESCO to its list of the World Cultural Heritage sites.
MountWuyi is southeast China's best area for biodiversity conservation, forming refuge for a large number of ancient and rare species. It contains large numbers of reptiles, amphibians and insect species, many of which are peculiar to China. The Nine Bend River's serene beauty and dramatic gorges, which are dotted with its numerous temples and monasteries, many now in ruins, provided the setting for the development and spread of neo-Confucianism.This doctrine,in turn, played a dominant role in the countries of East and South-East Asia for many centuries and influenced philosophy and politics over mant parts of the world since the 11th century.
One Line Sky Scenic Spot
All my friends, the cliff which we are seeing, which is hundreds of zhang(a Chinese measurement) long and thousands of feet high,is called the“Ling Cliff”.This cliff consists of three adjoining cliffs and holes: the Ling Cliff is over to the left, the Wind hole is located in the middle, and the Fuxi hole is over on the right. Now,please follow me inside through Fuxi hole.It is very dark,so please take care. Now,we have reached the bottom of the rock,so please raise your heads. There is a crack on the top, just like a split axe.It is less than one foot wide and over one hundred meters long, from which one light is leaking into the cliff, just like the rainbow bridging in the blue sky. That is the miracle of uncanny workmanship and hence the name,“One Line Sky”.
As for its origin, there are so many folklore. Some have said it is pictured by a peach blossom maid using embroidery needles; others have said it is cut by Fuxi using Jade axe. However, according to the scientific analysis, the red rock of Wuyi is layered by Sandston,Conglomerate and Shale. The nature of the stone is relatively loose and fragile. In the process of crust rising, the layer will become slightly split, owing to the influence of uneven pressure, which forms the so-called“Veins”.These vertical veins will begin to dissolve and erode as the water flows over the rock through time, only to expand and enlarge gradually. And the loose Shale in the bottom of the layer will also be eroded into shallow stone holes. Thus, three holes in one line, leading to the creation of the“One Line Sky's”natural scenery.
After appreciating the“One Line Sky”in the Fuxi Cave,we will take a few steps and enter the Wind Cave, where we can feel the cool wind blowing from the stone crack.Even though it is mid-summer,you will find this place cool and pleasant. The words,“Wind Cave”,were written on the cliff by Xu Ziqiang, who was born during the Song Dynasty. After leaving it,we will go across one stone corridor named the“Ling Grotto”.It is said that an immortal person surnamed Ge conquered monsters here.So it is also named“Immortal Ge Grotto”.Inside there is an old well called“Holy Water Well”.
After leaving the Ling Grotto and walking several hundred meters,we can see a vertical rock stone like a wall that has many small holes resembling the windows of a large building.According to the legend, this is the so-called“Immortal Attic”,as well as Attic Crag. The left side is the“Rock Lan”.The cliff sculptures are arranged in a crisscross pattern. You can see that one stone leans against the cliff, and there is a stone path into it,just like a path named“Gate in the Heaven”.The cave in front of the rock is called“Luo Shi Cave”.It takes a few miles to get from Attic to the valley, and then you can see steep stones standing alone in a highly noticeable way on the left. That is“Tiger Screaming Cave”.According to a well-known legend,an immortal rode a screaming tiger.Actually, the sound of the tiger comes from one stone cave,as the wind blowing through the cave sounds just like a screaming tiger.
All my friends,I wonder whether you find any similarity between the“Tiger Screaming Cave”and the“Dawang Peak”.“Dawang Peak”is elegant,all-round steep and towering aloft. The path of mountain-climbing is winding, just like a ladder leading to the sky.A half crag hovers over the cliff and there is a small platform at the foot of the rock.Do you think it looks like a deck of a small boat? That is one of the eight tigers screaming scenes,or“Bu Lang Zhou”.Next to it,there is a grotto which is covered by steep cliff, overlooking valleys,or the“Zhuzhen Grotto”.It can take dozens of people here.During Qing Emperor Kangxi's reign,a county magistrate named Wang Zi visited here. After seeing the cave next to a brook,he changed the name into“Huxi Cave”,carving the words,“Huxi Ling Cave”,on the stone cliff. If we step away,we will see the old site, the“Tiancheng Xiangyuan”,which is a famous yard on Mount Wuyi. The cliff here is slanted, the brook is against the current, and the terrain is deep and serene,as well as spacious. The houses built here only have four-sided earth walls without any tiles,in case of erosion. At night, you can look up at the stars and moon and listen to the sound of the flowing water, which places yourself in the midst of moon and stars, while being immersed in the mix of water and sky.The stone gate in front of Xiangyuan Yard is named“Pumendou”,meaning that Guanyin delivers all living creatures from torment. The rock sculpture of Guanyin holding“ruyi”is made of jade,a symbol of good luck.and was built in 1994.It is ten meters high, leans against the cliff, and is dignified and sedate. This spring on the right side of Buddhist is named“Yu'er Spring”.It winds between the stone cracks, and the sound of its flowing water swashing against the rocks is just like baby babbling. That is the origin of its name.According to the statement in“Miscellany of Wuyi”,written by the Ming Dynasty author,Wu Shi,the spring is as strong as paste and is so clear that we can recognize each hair clearly when put it in a cup.It also tastes sweet and rich, and makes people comfortable and soft.So when people began drinking tea, they made a point of fetching this pure and natural water when boiling their tea. After tasting“Wuyi Rock Tea”made from“Yu'er Spring”by the Xiangyuan Yard's monks, the Qing Dynasty poet,Yuan Mei,wrote:“Smell comes first, and then its flavor,I chew it slowly and the delicate fragrance comes out.Even the sweet smells linger around my tongue.Cup by cup,it makes people free from anxiety and feel relaxed. Then we will find Longjing is insipid despite clean,Yangxian is good but its lingering charm is weaker, that is just like the difference between jade and crystal.”Ok,there is a tea-booth ahead, and you can have a rest and taste some tea.As we proceed from here,I wonder whether you can feel the drops of water drip on your heads. That is“Yanliu”dropping from the top cliff.Sometimes,a whole line of drips pour down constantly,a“Fayu Xuanhe”,which is one of eight tigers screaming scenes.
Tianyou Peak Scenic Spot in Wuyi Mountain
Ladies and gentlemen, the wall we see now is the relics of Wuyi Academy. It was designed and built by Zhu Xi,the great Song Dynasty geologist, during the eleventh year of the Song Dynasty Chunxi Emperor's reign. In this academy,Zhu Xi engaged himself in writing and preaching for as long as ten years, thus cultivating a large number of talents. At the same time, feudal rulers across various dynasties attached great importance to the academy's work. The Wuyi Academy's remains have now been maintained by the governors of Fujian and Zhejiang Province for over 200 years.
After walking along the Wuyi Academy for several hundred meters,we can see more than ten grottos of different sizes at the Joint-Bamboo Peak's foot. These caves came into being when rocks collapsed.During spring or winter clouds and mist arise out of the caves and float around the rocks.Theses clouds constantly change by merging and drifting apart; hence this spot has been named as“Cloud Nest”.
Now the stone gate in front of us is the relics of Shugui Academy. And the four Chinese characters“Shugui Jingshe”can be clearly seen written on the gate, right? Shugui, whose full name is Jiang Zhi,was recommended to assume official commission for his filial and impartiality in the Northern Song Dynasty. There has been a fastidiousmonu-ment in memory of him, built in the early Qing Dynasty. It is a pity that there is only a stone gate left.Through the gate,we can find another scene, grandiose and bright. On the left beside the Nine Bend Brook is the Shizhao Lotus Pavilion; on the right is the Hidden Screen Peak. This peak is connected to the Jointbamboo Peak, whose three horizontal hillside traits are actually joints.
The Water Moon Pavilion is located below the Hidden Screen Peak.It is said that in a bright evening with a full moon and few stars, people who drink there can see four moons. Can you guess,my friends, which are they? Of course, they are the one in the sky,the one in the water, the one in the cup and the one in your heart.
Look! The giant black stone amidst the Cloud Nest seems to be a crouched elephant. It is known as Iron-elephant Rock.A fissure lies in the middle of the rock, and when walking through it we can only see a thin thread of light. Thus we call it“Little One Line Sky”to distinguish it from the One Line Sky in Xinan.
Iron Elephant Rock divides the Cloud Nest into an upper and lower part. Its superior location has made many a scholar yearn to work here. For example, during the 11th year of Ming Dynasty Emperor Wanli's reign(1583),Chen Sheng, the Minister of the Ministry of War in feudal China, built the Youxi Hut between the upper and lower Cloud Nest.It consisted of ten beautiful building, including Binyun Hall,Chaoyun Tower,Shengyun Terrace, and Qiyun and Chiyun Pavilions. These names all refer to places for clouds to gather and scatter. However,it is said that those buildings have been deserted.Only the stone inscriptions remind people of their prosperity in bygone days.
Now please look at the two Chinese characters“Hidden Tiger”on the front rock. They were carved by Youxi Hut's master,Chen Sheng. In 1583 Chen Sheng relieved of his duties in the government, due to his conflicts with the Prime Minister,Zhang Juzheng.Although urged to stay by the emperor,he still resigned and returned to his hometown Fujian Province.Depressed for not being able to realize his political ambitions,he decided to retire to Wuyi Mountain. After seeing this sleeping-tiger-like rock,he then carved on it,implicating that he wished he could regain his status and serve the emperor.
On the right side of Hidden Tiger Rock are bamboos, you see? They are square bamboo mentioned by Mr.Guo Moruo in his poem,Touring MountWuyi. This kind of bamboo seems round but really is square, which is very strange. If you do not believe that, come to have a touch.
At the end of the stone path in front of the rock,a stone gate will come into your sight, with the words,“Lofty and Steep Ignorance”on its porch.Inside the gate is another view sight, and the cave is called Tea Cave. The quality of tea produced there is even better than that in WuyiMountain.Standing in the cave,we can look down at the Joint-Bamboo,Tianyou,Immortal's Palm and Hidden-Screen Peaks, the Qingyin Rock,as well as Xianyou Rock at the Third Bend. And this cave is surrounded by wall-like barriers; the only path is the aperture on the west side.As this cave covers merely 0.4 hectares, our view looking up is limited, much like that of a frog in a well. The famous Chinese geographer,Xu Xiake, left detailed records of the Tea Cave's scenery in his prose Travelling Notes on MountWuyi.
Going through the Stone Gate, the Rooster's Breast and the Dragon's Back, one can see“Boundary Between Mortals and Immortals”written on the cliff, which means only those who dare to complete the dangerous path in Wuyi Mountain, the Rooster's Breast and the Dragon's Back, have chance to get to the top of the peak, the fairyland.
Yilan terrace, located in the center of Wuyi,is a tiptop terrace for sightseeing. Here we can enjoy the five tiptop sceneries as time goes by.They are the sun-rising,the clouds and mists, the halation of Buddha, the sun-setting and the moon.If we have an overlook from the Yilan Terrace,we'll find clusters of peaks. The west peak is called Trireligion and the east one is called King.Looking down at the Nine Blend Brooks on which floats the bamboo rafts, the mountains and rivers are all in our view. This will make us feel open-minded and be taken by the scenery. We'll never think of going back.
Keeping going ahead from the Yilan Terrace,we'll see the Tianyou Cloister,a building of palace style. On the Miaogao Terrace behind the cloister, there's the rare-seen red berry with the ancient name panel. When they are in mature time, the bean-pods drop to the earth. Then the blackish red beans, blinking and lovely get out of the bean-pods.Wang Wei,a poet in Tang Dynasty once wrote a poem, saying:“When those red berries come in springtime, flushing on your southland branches; Take home an armful, for my sake,as a symbol of our love.”I hope you can bring several red berries home as the best remembrances.
My friends, that's all about Tianyou Peak. Now please take a break and then we'll go to the next scenic spot, the Jiuqu Stream.
Jiuqu(Nine-Turns) Stream
Jiuqu(Nine-Turns) Stream takes its source in the southeast of Huanggang Peak of Wuyi Mountain Nature Reserve and is60 kilometers long. Thanks to the conservation and purification of more than 50,000 hectares of green forest around,it is rich in water resources and its runoff amounts to700 million cubicmeters every year. Moreover, the water is very clear and its quality isexcellent. It twists through the Wuyi Mountain scenic spot from west to east, and its course has nine turns. These nine turns are why it is called Jiuqu Stream. The stream flows for about 10 kilometers through the scenic areas mountains.Every turn of the stream presents visitors with a charming landscape painting.Traveling downstream on a bamboo-boat,we can view and admire the mountains, enjoy the pure and transparent water, feel the splashing waves and appreciate the songs of the various birds. It is really too pleasant and wonderful for words. If MountWuyi is compared to a symphony,Jiuqu Stream is a recurring theme; if MountWuyi is compared to the art museum,Jiuqu Stream is the most spectacular landscape promenade.
Rivers and streams must meet rigorous international standards to qualify as scenic rivers and streams.Water must flow through them all the year round, the water must be clear, not muddy, the river's course should be bended, not straight, the width of the river must change, and the scenery surrounding the stream or river should be mountainous. These mountains should be varied and beautiful in appearance and the ratio and distance between them and the river or stream should vary. Finally, the mountains and the surrounding in general must have a good ecological environment with varied flora and fauna.According to those standards, what do you think of the Jiuqu Stream? Give a mark to it after your appreciation.
Honorable guests, since you have toured the Jiuqu Stream, how do you like it? Is it really very singular and splendid? The 9.5-kilometer Jiuqu Stream winds its way through the whole area, but the river's straight-line distance is only about 5 kilometers. That is to say,due to so many turns in the river,Jiuqu Stream is4.5 kilometers longer. The bending coefficient of the river together with the gradient of the river bed gives rise to the fast water flow and the severe erosion. As a consequence, water flows slowly and splashes over the convexes while water flies over concave banks, where there are green pits to produce one vortex after another.Jiuqu Stream with nine turns is full of alternating shoals and pits.
Jiuqu Stream mainly flows from west to east, and this course is obviously determined by the east to-west fracture. However, the bend channel segments flow in a south to north direction, and this course is obviously determined by the south-to-north fracture. The impact of fractures in different directions,as well as erosion and accumulation effect by water flow acts on all nine turns of this stream. As a result, the Nine Turns stream landscape comes into being.
This stream lies between two steep cliffs and is very narrow. This is a typical feature of river valley landscapes, which are formed by the combined action of powerful uplift by the crust and strong downward erosion caused by flowing water.Jiuqu Stream and the hills and mountains around it fit beautifully together. This landscape is changing constantly, and rafting on the bamboo-boat along the stream is a popular way of touring Wuyi. Moreover, there are lots of scenic spots and rich historical and cultural landscape around the stream. Are they all very attractive?
Honorable guests, have you ever fully appreciated the beautiful scenery of WuyiMountain? I hope that the Jiuqu Stream water has made an incredible impression on you.OK,our tour to Jiuqu Stream is over now.Thank you all for your cooperation!
