The gate towers east and west of the inner city are flanked by the 61 Stone Statues. In order to commemorate the leaders of Chinese minorities and envoys from foreign countries that attended Emperor Gaozong's funeral,Wu Zetian ordered these stone statues to be carved into life-size stone figures and they were aligned on both sides of the passage way. Vivid and lifelike, every figure is decently robed and girdled and standing in dignified solemnity. Their heads were mostly damaged long ago.Now only two statues are complete with heads and they have high noses and deep-set eyes. Most probably, they were envoys from Central and Western Asia. Their nationality, official positions and names can be found on the backs of the stone statues.Having been exposed to the weather over the years, most of the characters are undecipherable.Only the stone statues of the envoys who allegedly came from Iran and Afghanistan bear clear inscriptions.

The Qianling Mausoleum has a circum-ference of 40 kilometers, with 17satellite tombs around it.

Whose Dog Was the Smartest?

Four friends were arguing over whose dog was the smartest. The first man,an engineer, called to his dog,“T Square, show your stuff.”The dog trotted over to a desk, pulled out a paper and pencil, and drew a perfect triangle.

The next guy,an accountant, called to his dog,“Slide Rule,go ahead.”The dog went to the kitchen, nibbled opened a bag of cookies and divided the contents into four equal piles.

The next man,a chemist, beckoned his dog,Beaker,to show what he could do.The dog went to the fridge, took out a quart of milk and poured out exactly eighty ounces into a measuring cup.

The last man was a government worker.“Coffee Break,”he hollered to his dog,“go to it.”With that, the dog jumped to his feet, soiled the paper, ate the cookies and drank the milk.
