研究显示食管癌患者营养不良的盛行率高达61%~ 78%,且平均体重减轻为16.3%,居所有癌症患者之首,若营养状况持续恶化,身体无法负荷随之而来的治疗(如手术、化学治疗、放射治疗),将会影响患者的存活率。Odelli等人针对接受化学治疗合并放射治疗之食管癌症患营养支持的研究显示,患者给予定期的营养评估与支持,可以改善患者体重、提高治疗的完成率。Isenring、Capra与Bauer研究60位在放射治疗期间的消化道癌患者,结果显示治疗期间每周给予营养咨询,可以减轻患者体重下降的程度,改善身体功能及生活品质。
