Clever Alice

There was once a girl called,"Clever Alice." One day, a man called Hans came to propose to her.

Hans asked the girl's parents,"Is Clever Alice really so clever?"

The father replied, "Just as her name suggests, she is very clever."

Hans stayed for a meal. The mother made Alice go and fetch some wine. Clever Alice picked up the decanter and headed down to the wine cellar. Along the way, she used the lid to beat steadily at the decanter, so that she wasn't lonely.

When she arrived at the cellar Clever Alice poured wine from the barrel while looking around her. She saw a pickaxe hanging from the beam above her. She could not help but think, "If I get married with Hans and have children, when the children grow up and we make them come down to fetch wine, this pickaxe might fall on their heads and kill them."

The more Clever Alice thought, the sadder she became. She burst into tears.

The mother saw that Clever Alice had still not returned so she sent a housemaid to look. The servant reached the basement and saw Alice sitting on the floor crying. She asked, "Clever Alice, why are you so sad?"

Clever Alice said, "If I get married to Hans and have children, when the children grow up and we make them come to the cellar to fetch wine, the pickaxe might fall on their heads and kill them."

The housemaid sighed and said, "You really are clever, Alice!" And so she sat down by Clever Alice's side and started to weep in anticipation of this unfortunate future.

Clever Alice's mother and father waited and waited. Seeing that Clever Alice and the servant had not returned, they sent the butler to see what had happened. Following this, they went down to the cellar themselves. On hearing Clever Alice's sobbing explanation, they both said, "You really are clever, Alice!" They sat down and cried with her.

Hans sat in the drawing room for a very long time. Seeing that no-one was coming up, he could not help but go down to the basement to see what happened. He saw five people crying together and asked what had happened. Clever Alice told him, "Dear Hans, if I get married to you and we have children, when the children grow up and we make them come to the cellar to fetch wine, the pickaxe might fall on their heads and kill them."

Hans sighed, "Since you are so clever, then lets get married."

And so, Hans and Clever Alice got married.

One day, Hans sent Clever Alice to the fields to cut wheat. Clever Alice brought a jar of tasty porridge along and went out to the fields. She thought for a long time, but didn't know whether to first cut the wheat or first drink the porridge. In the end she decided to first drink the porridge, so she drank the whole jug. She then thought, "Should I first cut the wheat, or first take a nap?" After thinking for a while, she decided to take a nap first. She lay down in the field of wheat and went to sleep.

At dusk, Hans saw that Clever Alice had still not returned and so he went to the wheat field to look for her. He saw that the wheat had not been cut and that Alice was lying in the field sound asleep. He could not help but be angry, and wanted to play a trick on her.

Hans ran home and fetched some small bells, which he hung around Alice's head. He returned home and locked the door.

Alice didn't wake up until it had turned dark. She stood up and heard a "ding-aling, ding-a-ling" sound. She thought this to be very strange. When she took a step forward, the bells sounded again. She was very scared, and didn't know if she was Clever Alice or not.

She returned home, wanting to ask Hans. But the door was locked. She knocked at the windows, asking, "Hans, is Clever Alice home?"

Hans said, "Yes, she is home."

Clever Alice was astonished, "Oh Lord, then I am not Clever Alice. Who am I?"

And so, she ran off to knock at other people's doors. However, when people heard the sound of the bells, they refused to open the door.

Rumour has it that until now, Clever Alice still does not know who she is.
