身边的教育

自从实施全民universal education^［1］以来，elementary education^［2］, secondary education^［3］, higher education^［4］以及后来兴起的adult education^［5］都发生了巨大的变化。不管是public school^［6］还是private school^［7］，其办学规模，办学质量有了很大的飞跃。人的一生需要不断学习的特性决定了教育是一项经久不衰的事业。从呱呱落地到进入nursery school^［8］, kindergarten^［9］，再到elementary school^［10］, junior high school^［11］, senior high school^［12］，我们都在接受最基本的，最重要的教育。

进入大学，我们便开始接受专业性的教育。通常有college of liberal arts^［13］, college of science^［14］, college of engineering^［15］, college of law^［16］, college of commerce^［17］, college of sociology^［18］, college of agriculture^［19］, medical college^［20］等各种类型的学校供我们选择。

根据自己的兴趣爱好，我们可以选择自己喜欢的major^［21］去学习。如果你喜欢哲学，那么你可以选择department of philosophy^［22］；如果你爱好literature^［23］，你可以选择department of Chinese literature^［24］或department of English literature^［25］；如果你对媒体感兴趣，你可以选择department of journalism^［26］或department of mass communications^［27］；如果你喜欢逻辑推理，你可以选择department of mathematics^［28］或department of physics^［29］；如果你喜欢工程建筑，你可以选择department of electrical engineering^［30］或 department of mechanical engineering^［31］或department of civil engineering^［32］。

一般大学的period of schooling^［33］都为四年。课程设置都为basic course^［34］, specialized course^［35］, required course^［36］, selective courser^［37］。完成四年的学习后，需要参加毕业考试并撰写毕业论文。通过这些graduation appraisal^［38］后，才可以在graduation ceremony^［39］上取得diploma^［40］和degree^［41］。
